The Church of the Good Shepherd, Tekapo Weddings
Situated on the shores of Lake Tekapo, Tekapo is 230-kilometres by road from the international airport in Christchurch. Though Google Maps advises a drive time of three-hours, this fails to take into account the narrow, winding road from Geraldine to Tekapo. A four-hour drive time is more realistic.
While there are a number of wedding venues in Tekapo, the main Tekapo wedding venue used for ceremonies is The Church of the Good Shepherd.
This popular stone church on the shores of Lake Tekapo is arguably Tekapo's most photographed location and rightly so. With the lake as the back drop, it is a truly stunning location to get married.
The Church offers Christian Marriage Blessings for couple's already married, as well as marriages. The only person who can ordain a wedding is a New Zealand registered Christian Clergy. Marriage celebrants are not allowed to perform services in the Church.
The Church of the Good Shepherd seats 65-people. Should you have a larger wedding party, the spill over guests will have to stand outside the church and listen to the ceremony via the Church's sound system.
While the Church has a number of restrictions - no confetti or rice streamers - the main restriction is that the Church doesn't allow gay or same sex marriages, though it warmly welcomes people of any sexual orientation to visit the church and attend worship services.
There are a number of post wedding locations, which are ideal for bridal party photos. These include:
- in and around the shore of Lake Tekapo
- the Mt John Observatory, and
- Lake Alexandrina
